The most common mistake people make when they start building a new web site is starting at the wrong end.

They put all their attention to web design - making the site look good, finding software to run the site and taking care of all the technical aspects of building the site, which all are things that have to be done, but...

Unfortunately that could be the recipe to failure  

One critical element that may not have been taken into consideration is: What are the goals of the web site? Who is the site approaching? Is there a hungry market out there waiting to join the site or wanting to pay for whatever it is that you are offering?

If these elements aren't in place you may face an uphill battle trying to make a good profit with your new site.

 

The right approach

The logical and most sensible steps to take when you start - not just a web site - but any new business are - in chronological order:

  • Finding a product/service that a defined market is hungry for
  • Get access to - or create - that quality product/service
  • Have an effective way to deliver the product/service to the hungry market

Did you notice the order in which the steps were set out?

  1. Firstly you have to find out what people want - or better - what they are real hungry for
  2. Secondly you work out a way that you can get access to whatever it is that they are so hungry for…
  3. And then, finally, you set up the delivery system that will give them easy access to it

Let's repeat the number one step, because this is very important:

First find the hungry market  

It's no good getting excited about a new project that YOU think is fantastic if nobody else shares your excitement.

So what is the quickest and easiest way to find if there exists a market that is hungry for what you have to offer?

To find the hungry market, the first thing any online business should do is:

Set up a Google AdWords campaign

This is one very simple, low risk and effective technique to save you a lot of time, money and wasted energy when you set out to build an online business.

Refine your website around this process till you get a steady stream of traffic coming to your site.

Then, and only then, should you throw your energy onto every other marketing technique using the tools you have put together with the Google AdWords campaign - and that have proven to get traffic!

  2. Set up an affiliate program
  3. Microsoft Search Advertising
  4. Leave links to your site in Discussion Forums and well visited places on the net
  5. Email promotions
  6. Write press releases
  7. Banner ads
  8. Ads in respected email newsletters
  9. Direct Mail
  10. Offline advertising - classified or display ads in relevant magazines or newspapers
